Brands To Know: Everlane

Everlane is a online-based clothing brand that is specializing in easy, classic clothing. They have based their business model on "Radical Transparency" AKA they want consumers to know exactly how much each product costs to make and open our eyes to the retail mark up other luxury brands add.

Everlane produces shockingly high quality products with affordable price tags...including the softest t-shirts, slim-fit chinos, lululemon-esque athleisure wear without the price tag, cashmere hoodies, and overnight bags that are under $100 bucks.

PS. They offer free shipping if you order two of more items and FREE returns // If you are in SF or NYC, head out to one of the showrooms!

The Lesson: The Dress Shoe

This is another lesson in where to splurge or where to save. Remember a few years ago when oxfords with colored soles were having a moment? Trendy footwear is a place where you can save. The wear and tear is not as important so you can shop the cheaper brands like Steve Madden or Aldo because you won't be wearing those season after season.

However, if you are strapping into a suit everyday, spend money on your shoes. Spend your extra beer money on a quality pair of shoes. Classic styles (read: NO square toes) will always be in style and last you years...as long as you take care of your shoes. Find a local cobbler (They still exist, I promise) and bring your shoes in twice a year for maintenance. The combination of weekly leather upkeep and sole replacements will save you a ton a money in the long run. Learn how to clean your shoes here.

Look for styles that have a thinner sole, and a clean, sleek toe. If you want to keep your shoes a bit flashy, try a monk strap instead of a go-to lace up. Some Perforated Brogues (that distinct hole pattern design) are still formal enough for a suit but lean a bit more casual.  All these looks are still very classic, but keeping a bit of interest on your feet. The Essentials: Slim Dark Denim

Denim is something you (unfortunately) need to head to a store for. You have to try them on...and then take them off and then ask if they do in-store hemming...I know, it sounds like a real drag. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Your closet, your butt and your boo will thank you.

The Details:

Look for a solid, dark denim wash. This means little to no whiskering. (FYI--Whiskering is the tinted brush-like design painted on denim to look extra worn). Flat, dark jeans keep your legs looking long and transition from work to a night out seamlessly.

Denim with a bit of stretch to them will feel as awesome as sweats and look like the exact opposite.

Get the hem tailored. A build up of extra fabric around your ankles does nothing to improve your look.

Keep the fit modern-slim. A simple balance between not being skin-tight and not looking like you are carrying camping supplies in your pants.

Spend money on jeans. Think quality over quantity. Well-made jeans will last you forever and look like a million bucks.

The Essentials: The Polo

Easy to wear: It literally goes with everything you already own. Goes easy with chinos or jeans. Perfect for that lax office environment or the Casual-friday-what-the-hell-do-I-wear moment.

Easy to clean: Throw this right into that heaping pile of laundry and into the machine.

THIS WAY

I've been styling for over 7 years in Television & Film. I've always been into clothing and somehow I became fortunate enough to get paid for it.

With This Way, I'm breaking down men's clothing into the basics. I want to make getting dressed easier and simpler. I want to be the little voice in your head telling you to stop wearing those ratty jeans from college and to put down graphic T shirt that smells like teen spirit. Think of me like a nudge in the right direction. When you look good, you feel good. Clothing can say some much about you, why not have some fun with it?
